I’ve heard it said that Russell Means made the statement regarding his book that he pretty much covered his ass- a priority for him.
I think the approach taken with the so called Republic of Lakota was the same-he covered his ass by making statements like “we” didn’t promise anyone anything”, then attempts to paint that as being a thoughtful consideration when the truth was nothing could be promised without sticking his neck out-that all Russell had to offer was the predictability of his own empty words-his own braying.
The reality is that the RoL as it exists is as bogus as Russell is, he covered his ass in every imaginable way and it amounts to little more than a personal attention grab and a vehicle to solicit donations.
Easily understood that the government would respond in the way it did- to just ignore the latest rantings-understood and relied upon.
He covered his ass by announcing that it would in effect be free range for any and all who wanted to come-that those who he has railed against for years as living on stolen land were more than welcome to stay- understanding that any attempt to remove them and he would have his ass handed to him.
What is sad about all this are those who bought into it-a demographic that included such diversity as Bubba and his pet goat living in the trailer park, wannabe anarchists and new agers, to those instilled with the desperation of poverty characteristic of rez life.
A “hero”, a “patriot”, a “liberator”? That will be true at about the same time pigs fly and equality is the rule of thumb.
An honest look at Russell’s record is as much an eyeopener as the voting record of any politician-the promises made and what eventuates are routinely diametrically opposed.
Independence, self reliance, and self governance are the shared dream of all the nations-but it must be understood that these things begin with the individual, no one, least of all Russell Means can make a gift
of them, nor arguably even facilitate them.
Those who believe otherwise will find nothing changes for them, that stagnation and dependency will be the order of the day. I invite one and all who differ with my opinion to provide an example of what benefit Russell’s so called Republic has created for them-how it has improved the quality of their life.
How about that IBank -anyone with a story to relate how it has improved their life, had any impact at all, made an iota of difference?
If they are unable to perhaps it is time to consider that it amounts to nothing more than a lot of hot air. Perhaps too they should ask themselves what benefit resulted from WK2-did it elevate a people, lift them from poverty, “liberate” them, create an influx of jobs and opportunity, improve the standard and quality of life?
Only AIM, Means, Banks, and the like have realized any profit from either-that’s known as trickle UP economics where wealth migrates to the top, to the one percenters.
I would have all good things for the Lakota, for all the nations-if this is to be it will come as a the result of their own efforts and at a time when the scourge of this AIM leadership has passed on.
Predictably the so called formation of the RoL has accomplished nothing more that to further embolden hucksters and engender new ones. Their personal pursuit of attention and donations doesn’t put food on the table, heating for a home during winter, or fuel in anyone’s vehicle but their own.
No one but them is flying first class, indulging hobbies, or reclining in comfort…..maybe I’m missing the point but that doesn’t seem like leadership to me.
Does it to you? Does it sound like patriotism or liberation?
