While these video links speak to a great sadness and heartache for the nations personally I don’t have much tolerance for things such as these and so that influences the approach I take.
I’m of the opinion that it results from a communal failure first and foremost and that it must be addressed on that level.
The history of the nations is that they have always “policed” their own communities, there were standards that were adhered to, traditional beliefs played an important roll in this, the focus was directed more to communal well being than the individual.
An understanding that if harmony existed within a community it enhanced the life of one and all. When this sense of community is lacking it then becomes about the individual.
This is a part of AIM’s legacy-they created the foundation for it and now that it is out of control they have little if anything to say about it.
The “liberators” power and influenced has waned dramatically, what is left of it resides in the majority with non indigenous people-it is tenuous at best, and they know to challenge the gangs now would lead to a confrontation they can neither afford or win- it would amount to the pot calling the kettle black.
So while they sit in the midst of their affluence they elect to address other issues-issues that will find support due to a shared experience and only point the finger away from the rez, away from themselves.
Poverty for some will always be viewed as an opportunity to capitalize on, a way to enrich themselves, and I often wonder how it is any who see videos depicting poverty and conditions such as this and then the homes and lifestyle of the nations one percenters are able to reconcile the two?
For them everything is seen as an opportunity, whether it be an alleged injustice or an illness. Injustice? an opportunity to stage a rally and receive an appearance fee- Illness? an opportunity to write a book or sell an e prayer. Poverty?-a vehicle to promote projects and acquire donations.
It is a circle that begins and ends at one point-the individual and how they will profit from it.
They remind me of hamsters on one of those exercise wheels-a lot of noise and energy but nothing changes around them. A personal money wheel to set in motion as the need or desire presents itself-and like hamsters are noted for leaving a mess for others to clean up.
