In the grand scope of life, the immensity of time and the Universe, I have no greater provenance than any other-and like others I am passing through this way but once.
What I or any other will leave as a record or a remembrance is what I or they have done-how we conducted ourselves-that and nothing more.
The awareness of this reality should be a humbling one for all- a perspective to view ourselves and our deeds from, in doing so it should be an impetus to acquit ourselves honorably, to do the least harm as a human being we can.
The blood and sacrifice of our ancestors blankets this land-all that we see now in this modern world, the corruption and the deceit, the inequity, poverty, and oppression, is an offense to their memory, an offense not only to the individual but to humankind.
Blood and sacrifice that incur an obligation, a debt- one that we must accept and execute each as their ability allows and with honor.
We know the characteristics of leadership, the qualities that define it from those who led us in the past-it is what is lacking today.
Too many chiefs and not enough Indians as the saying goes-too many “liberators” and not enough human beings. Leadership based not on ability but intimidation, cronyism, and self proclamation- we suffer mightily as a people for this.
We find ourselves in the identical situation as the American political landscape in settling for mediocrity rather than exceptionalism in those who say they would lead-in doing so if we will not look among our communities to see the effects of this mediocrity then we need only look outward to this country at large to understand the devastation it brings and will continue to bring until such time when we will say enough, take personal responsibility, and while demanding something better work to that end as nations.
There is a saying I’ve heard that every man is a king and his home a castle-maybe there is a truth in this in the sense that a home should speak to a certain sovereignty-but too many forget that a queen, princes, and princesses dwell within as well-and that they are equals.
There are those who view the nations as a long running “problem”, and a few who hold them to be personal fiefdoms-both forgetting each person is a sovereign entity in their own right….. and equal.
While we may have pretenders to the throne the truth is we have no kings, no royalty-it is as it has been, there are only the people-some good, some bad. Some worthy to lead, some not.
