Russell Means has passed on, and whether you loved or hated him, whether you believed him to be a patriot or a huckster, the impact he had on the nations and the country at large is undeniable.
I believed Means lived his life with an all consuming desire to be larger than life, to be iconic, it was important to him be remembered, to be spoken of-to carve out an historical niche for himself.
In having passed Russell will no longer have input or influence into the legacy he strove to create, and it will be interesting to see how that plays out.
In the immediacy of his death it will be a time for family and friends to grieve and offer remembrances-following that there will be books, probably a movie at some point, and for some an attempt to commercially capitalize with T-shirts, posters, bumper stickers, and other paraphenalia.
Maybe it really couldn’t be any other way-for as Russell said, AIM was adept at theater-and Russell being an actor spent most of his adult life on a stage he helped to create and maintain.
