I was listening to a broadcast at the below link that Mary provided in the blog hosapa 2. Lengthy but worth listening to, and it got me to thinking about a few things.
It’s reasonable to assume people would remember or at least be able to keep their story straight about what they were doing and where they were at during important events-especially if they or the organization they belong to is under suspicion concerning a murder.
An example would be Bill Means and the murder of Annie Mae Pictou Aquash.
The initial version as told by his brother and erstwhile patriarch of the clan, Russell, was that Bill was asleep when the phone call went to his house delivering the kill order for Annie.
That seems to have been an attempt to stay ahead of the curve , something immediate, a temporary stop gap-upon reflection the ensuing follow up response was changed to the phone had been disconnected and service wasn’t available during that specific time.
There may be other versions, other attempts to refine the alibi, but these two suffice to demonstrate the lack of credibility with anything emanating from Means camp.
The Bellecourts seem to have gone through the same process-more so by Vernon who was accused of making the call-sputtering long and hard during his denials.
Ultimately Vernon’s story was that he was in California with Banks at the time and had a plane ticket to prove it. Vernon was eager to reveal his whereabouts as Russell in not thinking it through when he accused Vernon at the Robert Branscombe news conference in ’99 stated that Vernon made the call from Minneapolis.
Of course Vernon’s alibi of being in California amounted to little more than sticking his foot in his mouth as Banks is considered to be the one who issued the AIM fatwah in the first place.
Didn’t help either that Vernon went on to expand on his alibi in saying that hardly a day passed when he didn’t make a call to Bill on AIM related business.
Well, the murder of Annie was strictly AIM business, and try as they might, the feds did it,or the feds made me do it, hasn’t done the trick.
In Russell’s cobbled together version hoping to deflect attention away from the Means gang, he went so far as to say he hadn’t any knowledge or ever heard that AIM had any involvement in Annie’s murder until just that year when he coincidently overheard women discussing it.
Doubtful any believe that other than the most dedicated of accolytes, if for no other reason than in 1994 during a conference held by the Confederated AIM chapters-a so called independent entity that had separated from AIM central command in Minneapolis the issue was raised about not only Annie Mae, but other victims.
So here we have an individual, Russell Means, who made every effort to present himself as the big dog with an encyclopedic knowledge of all things AIM ,all things rez related, basically saying he apparently didn’t even know of this conference.
Again something the accolytes have no problem in accepting.
These aren’t isolated examples featuring AIM figures-they are the stock in trade-from the evolution of Carter Camps explanations related to Ray Robinson’s murder to Russell making an fool out of of himself at the CST conference of last year in accussing people of picking on poor AIM in tying them to Ray’s murder at WK2.
In a near comic display of ignorance and arrogance Russell went on to ask the rhetorical question if anyone had even seen Ray at WK2? If he really wanted an answer he only had to ask Camp who has penned and voiced his own witness to the fact Ray was there and Ray was shot.
Of course that wouldn’t do though as words emanating from one who had delusions of being a liberator, patriot, and successor of Crazy Horse fully expected them to be received as undeniable absolutes.
An alternative Russell could have taken was to accuse Camp of fomenting an Cointel operation in making such statements-perhaps he didn’t though in remembering Camp had shot Clyde Bellecourt and maybe wasn’t someone to fool with.
Revisions and lies have been a way of life for the AIM leadership-it’s what they do. An example that others have followed from Leonard Peltier to Means, to Banks, ad infinitum.
As Regina Brave has said-yes AIM was asked to help during Dick Wilson era, but they staged and took over WK2 strictly for their own purposes, strictly for the publicity.
An event they went on to milk as a revenue source and never gave so much as dime to assist those who lost everything due to them.
But that’s the AIM leadership-what they’ve always been about, shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.
Phone records can be accessed by law enforcement-they can also apparently easily wire tap them- it would interesting to know if those records were accessed-and if they are part of an “ongoing investigation” that has had the longevity of a Galapagos tortoise?
You know, that ongoing investigation thing that arbitrarily allows everything to be “sealed” from public view.
