As we go through life we often change directions, leaving some opinions and ideology
behind and adopting new ones-this is often referred to as growing as a person.
While that may be true I don’t believe it is the case in every instance, and I don’t
believe it was been the case with an individual like Russell Means, or for that
matter the AIM leadership.
Means had at one time or another metaphorically speaking been in bed with
such politically diverse ideologies as expressed by Ron Paul, Sun Myung
Moon of Unification Church (moonies), Lyndon LaRouche of the Libertarian
Party, Larry Flynt of Hustler Magazine, “Wild Bill” Janklow, and James Abourezk.
My feeling are it wasn’t about a philosophical compatibility as much as it was about
chasing the spotlight and revenue.
Interesting to me that here is a man whose expressed beliefs and alliances bordered
on being schizophrenic, each new position spoken with passions and fervor, though I
question the depths of these when spoken by an actor and career grifter.
As any who have followed the blog have surely come to understand I also believe Russell
and the AIM leadership have been given some kind of immunity from prosecution despite
the decades long official announcements of ongoing investigations and pending indictments.
Two things that stand out regarding Russell are his complete lack of hesitancy to
co opt the Branscombe news conference of ’99 where by his and AIM’s own standard
“snitched” when pointing an accusatory finger at Vernon Bellecourt regarding the
authorization to murder Annie Mae Pictou Aquash-though I view that in the context
of an attempt whether true or not to direction attention away from his brother Bill
where the call to murder Annie was received.
Secondly the fact that he approached the CIA about funding his activities in
Central America. What kind of a relationship do you have to have after decades of
bad mouthing not only them but the feds, the BIA, and the government in general?
Could it be referred to as a love hate relationship, or perhaps was working one?
Means wanted the CIA to fund what would have been a mercenary force intent
on overthrowing a foreign government-yet worked the Cointel monologue at
Maybe hiding in plain sight amounts to something more than a literary coinage,
maybe it’s spy or operative craft.
I don’t view Means, Banks, or any of them as iconic figures, freedom fighters,
or individuals to hold up to the nations children as examples to follow-I see them
as mercenaries willing to do whatever it takes to get what they want.
There are some unmarked graves at Pine Ridge that attest to that-there is another
in Nova Scotia as well.
