I imagine most are aware that Nelson Mandela has been hospitalized and seriously ill.
Opinions vary about Mandela-some see him as a terrorist and others a freedom fighter, but one thing that is undeniable is that Nelson Mandela is a child of apartheid, a construct of inequity that shaped his life and led him from being a second class citizen to the presidency of South Africa where he performed admirably and sought a reconciliation among the people of his homeland.
The rez is this nations version of Soweto-a cauldron of inequity and anger, the lack of opportunity, poverty, and a living breathing testament to American apartheid that awaits it’s own Mandela, it’s own truth and reconciliation commission.
In recent times we’ve had those who have cast themselves in the light of liberators and patriots, and perhaps they could have been were it not for their personal greed and sense of entitlement-but in the end they amounted to little more than pretenders one and all.
Obama is in South Africa having photos taken of himself in Mandela’s old prison cell at Robben Island, pledging billions of dollars, and saying he is humbled by the experinence-I can’t help but ask is he not humbled by the apartheid taking place in this country-of the glaring inequities, and his own administrations trampling of human rights?
