The above linked article is about as evenhanded a one as the reader will find, Obama may “still sound like” he wants to openly discuss this with the American public but that’s politics, what you “sound” like while doing the opposite- this is a conversation he never wanted to have, if not then he would have initiated it before being backed into it.
“To say there’s a tradeoff doesn’t mean somehow that we’ve abandoned freedom,” he told Rose. “I don’t think anybody says we’re no longer free, because we have checkpoints at airports.”
This is as over a simplification as could possibly be presented, a calculated misdirection, as the core issue isn’t checkpoints at airports.
“This is only going to work if the American people have confidence and trust,” he said.
Then it isn’t going to work as that confidence and trust has not only been sorely abused but all but lost in the bargain as well.
It isn’t trust inspiring when the public discovers via a whistle blower and the media that the nsa is already developing what is said to be the encryption breaker of all encryption breakers while internet search engines, sites, and browsers talk about encrypting their traffic to break the stranglehold – neither is it confidence inspiring when the president takes bare bones minimalist steps to protect the rights of people and instead opts for a 180 day “review” by the foxes guarding the hen house.
Obama’s been making an issue of using presidential signings to forward his agenda in 2014, he could well use one to curb this beast, just as he could have to shut down Gitmo and instill that confidence and trust, but I think everyone knows that isn’t going to happen, and I wonder with the revelations about J. Edgar Hoover gathering files on politicians to facilitate his agenda if the nsa isn’t doing likewise?
Or if there is a fear and suspicion of it that influences political decisions being made- that in effect the nsa has become a shadow government, the real power behind the throne?
I suspect following the address there will be a release of new material from Snowden, I also suspect it will be increasingly damning.
Obama/Bush – Bush/Obama …one picking up where the other left off- a sad refrain from the non melodious governmental version of Ebony and Ivory.
We occasionally hear about “enemies lists” compiled by politicians, the latest to make the news is that of the Clintons, a list with a rating system of those who didn’t support Hillary’s presidential campaign – anyone who thinks this current administration doesn’t have a similar list is naive- it is a list that seems to encompass all who dare to raise their voice, all who say the direction taken is egregiously wrong- a list with the full array of technology aimed at them to know every word they speak, every call they make, every move they make, every nuance of their life.
Confidence inspiring isn’t it?
People may not know it or may be in denial about it as they sing the national anthem, but this country has entered the era of “twilights last gleaming” when it comes to civil rights and liberties, this a little more than a half century after the Civil Rights era and the movement it spawned
And this currently being presided over by a president who would not be where he is today were it not for the civil rights movement….as indigenous people we can now truly say welcome to the reservation.
