“But most everyone else has. Richard Two Elk called it “idiot fuel” to think that the murders of Aquash and Robinson might someday be resolved. “I don’t know if you can ever retire from these cases, but they’re not going to change anything,” he told me. I couldn’t help thinking that he meant changing things in the larger sense. Pine Ridge is one of the poorest Indian reservations in the country, with a per capita income of about $4,000 and an unemployment rate of 80 to 90 percent. Then Two Elk got on the subject of his own family: a child addicted to drugs; a sister killed in a car crash (for which he blamed AIM); a daughter and a niece molested by his brother, who went to prison. Each story was sadder than the last.
“It’s just something that I had to eat,” he said, shaking his head. “And so my point is, I told Rod Oswald that Anna Mae’s daughters — maybe they can simply be thankful for what they’ve been able to achieve, because they found the killers, or some of them.
That’s a lot more than what 99 per cent of us get. When you hear about Ray Robinson, lots of Indians might have something just as bad.
And so you think, Is it really fair he’s getting all the devotion?”
“Might have something just as bad”
That’s profound…kind of like saying if you lose a leg don’t complain because you have another one. It has the same ring to it as Banks words that it isn’t AIM’s position to address who killed who during a “war”.
Nothing would serve AIM better than for everyone just to drop the whole thing, thinking it would or that anyone would be satisfied with a partial justice extracted after decades sounds like the product of idiot fuel to me.
“Is it really fair he’s getting all the devotion?”
What a poor choice of words from a “journalist” – the better question is, is it fair that the AIM leadership should go unscathed for the crimes they committed? Are we as a people supposed to “eat” that?
There ought to be enough “devotion” to the truth and justice that everyone of the AIM leadership would be Peltier’s cell mates.
Enough “devotion” that such a question would never be asked.
If the murders of Annie, Ray, and victims of AIM at Wk2 are never resolved it will be the direct result of attitudes such as this, and what’s left of the leadership will continue running scams and laughing all the way to the bank.
I eat food, not bullshit as served up by AIM.
