The Sundance is arguably the most sacred of our ceremonies, with that in mind you would think the approach by those conducting and participating would be reverent and respectful, that the non indigenous would leave well enough alone.
Unfortunately that isn’t the case as the link below and multiples of others that could be added illustrate.
The title “sundance chief” is meaningless in the context of it’s current use and those who bestow it upon themselves as illustrated by “chief” Leonard Crow Dog and “chief” Dennis Banks, neither possessing the purity of heart and clean hands that has been a long held standard.
This is about self promotion and hustling – a product to market and a revenue source.
The non indigenous may be forgiven for their ignorance when not understanding the meaning and protocols, but never those who do, especially any among our own.
Now it is about Dennis Banks Sundance, Crow Dogs Sundance, even AIM’s Sundance as though they invented them, as though their personality transcends the ceremony itself and reminds me of televangelists who name events or entities after them self – like Oral Roberts University, or Jimmy Swaggerts Bible College or whatever it is.
I’d like to see one of these “chiefs” provide an example where our ancestors did the same, where they charged to attend, named a ceremony after themselves, or sold licenses to conduct to one.
The fact is they cannot, and their inability to do so exposes them for the frauds they are.
