Since the above was blogged in April of this year the talk and promotion of Russell Means being a “statesman” and dedicating a library to him has kind of fizzled out.
Understandable to my way of thinking as it was ill conceived, hasn’t garnered the anticipated support, and had about as much chance of staying afloat as an anchor.
Fundraising for said library and the latest book sales seem to have shared the same fate, and that may have led to a lawsuit being filed against a hospital, a sort of casting about in search of alternative revenue sources.
I suspect at some point we will see livestock sales or auctions, possibly the same for memorabilia in an attempt to squeeze a few more golden eggs from the goose that laid them.
The ultimate arrogance would be to restore the Wound Knee Museum Wilbur Reigert built and maintained that was wantonly ransacked and destroyed by AIM during WK2 as Riegert, a wheelchair bound elder, was evicted from his home and Means commandeered it as an “office”.
Upon restoration it could be re named The Russell Means Library and Museum.
Maybe a discography featuring the “Electric Warriors” greatest hits or the “collected works” in book form.
The real key to generating a windfall would be to write a candid biography, no holds barred, just the truth of Charles Russell Means.
No doubt though the author of such a book would be called a liar, fed, hater, or snitch, and that may explain in part why such a book from within the Means estate hasn’t been forthcoming.
His widow has been described by Means as being of Dineh ancestry and seeking her roots – being of Dineh ancestry it would be interesting to hear their take on Russell’s Chinle defense, the one he employed after assaulting his then eighty year old one armed father in law – the one where he sought to kick the concept of sovereignty under the bus not only for the Dineh but all the nations.
Hopefully Means widow has or will discover her roots and be faithful to them instead of a con artist.
I recall seeing a video where Means was shedding tears and saying he had to leave a “legacy” for “his people”……. well he did, and it’s one all the nations would be better off without.
