Rosalie Edge, now there was strong woman – suffragist, something of a “socialite”, and a staunch environmentalist.
Edge founded the Emergency Conservation Committee in 1929 and went on to establish the first raptor sanctuary known as the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in 1934.
Edge was instrumental in leading the movement to establish both the Olympic National Park and Kings Canyon National Park.
A few years back I acquired a tattered paperback edition of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring that was published in 1962.
A book whose influence is credited as being the impetus for the creation of the EPA.
Interesting to me is that apparently Edge and Carson were friends and Carson spent some research time at the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary gathering data for her book.
Raptors are magnificent birds and play a vital role in the eco system, I’ve been fortunate in the past to have the opportunity of participating in raptor rehabilitation, a great experience.
