Wings – without them birds couldn’t fly, airplanes wouldn’t get off the ground, and thoughts could never take wing.
But there’s more to it than that as languages have evolved, a wing can also be an extension of a building, or adlibbing in saying a person is winging it, a sort of making it up as they go along, a metaphor for a broken arm, a title for a book by Kahlil Gibran – The Broken Wings.
Then you have a political connotation as in right or left wing which brings me to the point I would make.
Left wing or right wing, liberal or conservative, Democrat or Rebuplican, wings that have given flight to the corporate takeover of the legislative process of this country.
Wings that have faciltated super pacs and bestowed policy making access upon their lobbyists.
Wings pulling in rhetorically different directions yet ultimately belonging to the same bird that has broken the wings of nations and people.
