It’s become something of a media and pundit pastime to interview Trump supporters and conduct polls, so far so good if you’re into such things, but it’s my feeling something is missing that could explain the “phenomena”.
And that would be?
Trump is a construct of “reality shows”, and what are such offerings about? Drama and perhaps escapism.
Often infantile, but more than that completely removed from reality, an inevitable outgrowth of soap operas.
Trump’s campaign is entirely about drama, the more there is and whether or not it has any basis in fact the better his supporters like it.
So my suggestion would be when conducting such interviews and polls is to delve into the viewing habits of the interviewees.
Are they fans of reality shows, are they irresistibly draw to click on any and everything about the Kardashians on the net?
Do they want to know all the latest celebrity gossip? Do they believe what they read in the rag magazines featured at checkout lines in the grocery store is true?
Is their favorite media source Fox News and their favorite media personalities Limbaugh, Hannity, or Megan Kelly?
Have they ever heard a conspiracy story they didn’t buy into?
In summation when you add it all up Trump’s entire campaign is singularly predicated on drama – ask about foreign policy and nothing specific, just that it’s great.
Ask about a tax program and it’s nothing specifc, just that it’s great and unnamed individuals (“experts”) who have looked at it love it.
Domestic policy, other than the Wall, Mexicans, and Muslims, no specifics, it’s just great.
I’ve seen polls that claim statistically conservatives are less likely to be a college graduate while liberals are the opposite, this is usually presented in a somewhat condescending and smirking manner.
While I am a strong advocate when it comes to education for our children I would also point out every politician is a college graduate and judging by their performance levels I’d drop the college degree thing as a talking point and lose the smirk.
Education or the lack of it minus common sense is a half empty glass.
Common sense can carry the day if need be, I don’t believe a college degree alone can – but then I only have a seventh grade education and could easily be accused of bias inspite of not being a Trump fan boy.
