Getting down to it, and about time.
The issue related to the cultivation of pot on the rez and inclusion in ceremonies is primarily about money – anything else is either a distant second or nonexistant.
Marijuana has never been a “sacred” part of any ceremony of the nations as the linked article clearly states – the attempt now is to portray it as such in view of successes related to the use of peyote.
The Native American Church was “founded” by Quanah Parker, in doing so no intent existed to turn it into a profit oriented business, not even as a vague consideration or afterthought – yet the NAC beginning in the sixties and seventies began taking on a different persona.
Just as people have flocked to what remians of the original NAC for “legal” access to peyote bringing their new age bs with them so too will they attempt to flock to the rez for pot.
As a people we’re going to be informed we have more “relatives” than we ever dreamed possible.
There are unscrupulous natives within our communities who seek to directly control the cultivation and distribution of peyote as a revenue source, this coupled with pay to pray inclusion in ceremonies where peyote is present and have their eye on the pot industry as well.
Likewise there are unscrupulous individuals who give themselves what they consider to be native names and titles and attempt to parlay that into something else.
The same will become the way of it with marijuana as it has with peyote, attempting to portray marijuana as a traditional “sacrament” of ceremonies is a thinly veiled ploy to gain “legal” access, attract a market, and increase it’s value.

Personally I don’t care if a person smokes pot or not, what I do care about is the ongoing corruption of our traditions and ceremonies, and as much as I am for all the nations I won’t mind a bit if the SC tosses this case as frivilous and singualrly without merit, a transparent attempt to invoke religious freedom while plucking the strings of “political correctness”.
Now I know wannabe nativists will go into denial but the truth of the matter is pot is a magnet for other drugs – where it is present so too are others ……. and that is a potential danger that will have to be addressed.
I know pot smokers who restrict themselves to pot, yet I’ve never known an addict or substance abuser who hasn’t said for them it all began with pot – then they went on to “experiment”, that it was a gateway drug for them.
And that as they say – is what it is denial or not.
