Three of four for Sunday – maybe there’s a new word in that, a “fourfer”.
Ignorance isn’t a virtue, but at the same time it can be multi faceted.
It can be born of innocence, a lack of opportunity, isolation, imposed, and even cultivated.
How can ignorance be cultivated one might ask?
An example would be creating and perpetuating a lie to the point of acceptance – it could also be cultivated by ignoring and excusing the obvious.
I think this cultivated ignorance has evolved not only into an “art form” but an acceptable behavior that permeates every level of modern society.
People often prefer the lie to the reality, less effort is required, the pond remains tranquil, undisturbed by ripples.
Nowhere is that truer than in the political arena.
It’s about getting over or making it through, and ultimately serves to validate the process.
Facts have less value than unsubstantiated generalities or the current spin.
Cultivated ignorance is a conveyance of decline whether it be political decline, moral decline, cultural decline, or the decline of national and personal integrity.
None of which bodes well.
The reality is all of humanity possesses a level of ignorance, and I see no generic negative in that though the world ignorance has become synonymous with negative connotations.
We cannot known all things, no one can, and there is an innocence in that, but if we would invest ourselves in anything and make no effort to become knowledgeable then we cultivate ignorance and the differences are monumental.
It has been my personal ignorance that led me to reading just about anything I can get my hands on.
It was my ignorance of a lack of marketable job skills that led me acquire them, my lack of vocabulary led me to learn new words.
Granted, pounding nails and learning the ins and outs of construction might not seem to be much an achievement to others but I like the work and consider the independence and benefits an accomplishment in comparison to the alternative.
These weren’t a cultivated ignorance , but ones of innocence that I’ve chosen and continue to address.
I’m not ashamed to admit them, but I would be ashamed had I done nothing and wasn’t willing to put forth the effort.
Every course politicians and government plot will impact us all, embracing a cultivated ignorance serves no good end – do the math, make the effort.
