According to the dictionary a carpetbagger was a Northerner who moved to the South after the Civil War to take advantage of the situation.
So we have two elements here that define a carpetbagger – someone not indigenous to an area or people and the intent to take advantage and profit.
The definition seems both straight forward and doesn’t leave a lot of wiggle room, and I submit it applies to individuals like Dennis Bank$ who relocated to Pine Ridge for a time to ply his wares and also Leonard Peltier who basically used PR as a sort of hideout when he was on the run from a Wisconsin warrant and now hasn’t uttered a word of dissent when as part of the myth he’s characterized as being Lakota, which he is not.
The Carpetbaggers of the post Civil War era were a nefarious lot preying on human misery, they may have verbalized a line or two about assisting in the reconstruction effort but history has shown otherwise.
I’d say it’s the same with Dennis Bank$, AIM, and Peltier – part of the sales pitch has always been “reconstruction”, ‘treaty rights”, and having the best interests of everyone at heart.
But the deconstruction of Pine Ridge by AIM, the damage and body count left in their wake tells an entirely different story.
Peltier’s “fight” for “treaty rights” consisted of interrogating women at gun point and the murder of two grieviously wounded men at point blank range – and of course the long running scam of calling for donations on the pretext of freeing an “innocent” man.
Carpetbaggers – look it up and say isn’t so.
