I think John Oliver would do well to understand a couple of things – the first being he’s neither the funniest or most insightful person on the planet.
Secondly after eight years in the WH, or even four for that matter, and all the associated bs a former president, any former president who experiences a little R+R in whatever amount they desire is what they are entitled to – a time to just relax, have some fun and forgo the pomp and circumstance.
They’re financially set for life what with retirement, book deals, speaking engagements, and the seemingly obligatory personal presidential library.
In seeking the Presidency one would normally believe it’s about a desire to serve the nation, but I don’t feel as though that’s a one size fits all, especially with this current administration whose focus seems to be serving their own interests, Russia, and corporations.
For those who embrace the concept of serving the nation I think they should return to their roots – for Obama that would translate to community organizing, he should visibly engage in the national Trump “resistance” even to the point of speaking at rallies like the women’s march and the upcoming April 15th rally when yet another of Trump’s lies will be addressed – that of his broken promise to release his tax returns if elected.
A promise/lie I seriously doubt anyone actually believed as the distance between truth and the lies Trump tells can only be measured in galactic distances.
Of course should Obama choose such a course the Republicans would have apoplectic seizures, they’d rail about sore losers and how undignified such things would be overlooking the fact that dignity isn’t a characteristic they embrace.
I believe Obama did some good things, but I also believe he dropped the ball on others, but I also believe it was a shining moment for Democracy to elect a black man.
A shining moment hopefully to be followed by others like the election of a qualified woman who can elevate the office unlike Hillary.
Hopefully at some point this nation will see an Hispanic, Asian, Native American, or representative of other ethnicities elected to the presidency as well.
Trump’s election was regressive, a knee jerk reaction to what was seen as an incursion into white presidential supremacy and entitlement.
A devolution attempting to insert Neanderthal and KKK dna into the entire population, but the handwriting is on the wall and it’s only a matter of time.
If you look at the record of Pence nothing much would be gained should Trump be impeached, the difference being that of taking half an aspirin or a whole one, but the message of sustained protest and the potential for more could not be readily ignored, and that could make a difference.
Every politician needs to be aware that they are accountable, and they should be held to account at the ballot box if not in a judicial proceeding.
They also need to understand that not only do they not own the country but they don’t even own the office they sit in.
In previous blogs I’ve expressed the opinion that the more clear headed among Republican elected officials and the electorate need to take their party back, and while I have notable differences with the ideology of individuals like John McCain and Lindsey Graham I am encouraged to see they are taking exception with a number of issues concerning Trump’s agenda unlike the paint by number party hacks like Ryan and Chaffetz.
I appreciate the fact that they are calling a spade a spade and haven’t adopted the line of let’s wait and see.
As to Oliver I like his show, think he’s a funny guy, but that doesn’t imply I agree with everything he says nor expect he would with every opinion I express.
