History often has a way of lionizing the wrong people, a sort of national whitewashing of inconvenient truths.
Andrew Jackson was a thug by any standard during any era as was George Armstrong Custer.
And yet both have been hailed as heroes at one time or another – epic figures mounted on white steeds rising to the occasion to blunt the advance of ravening hordes.
Had Trump of lived during their time we would have been his “Mexican rapists” of choice, his dark skinned threat to family values and a Christianity Trump verbally embraced for purely political reasons.
Trump represents the current incarnation of Manifest Destiny, only this time he’s widened the loop.
His vision of white privilege is exclusionary, a vision that caters to the wealthy intent on slashing essential services to parents, children, and grandparents some of whom just happen to be white themselves.
Meals on wheels? Gut it.
Funding for public schools? Gut it.
Healthcare? Gut it.
COLA’s, Medicare and Medical? Gut them.
What’s so bizarre about the support he generates among his constituents is that they act as though none of this will impact them, they seem to believe inspite of all the evidence to the contrary that based merely on the fact that they are white, wave a flag, and drool at the mouth about “their” country and god bless America there’s no reason for concern.
Yeah ,as a people, as nations, we survived Jackson, Custer, and a host of others to the tune of at the beginning of the twentieth century our total combined population had dwindled from millions to an estimated two hundred and fifty thousand.
We’re going to survive Trump as well just as the rest of the nation will, but it ain’t going to be easy and in the aftermath recovery is going to take a long time.
If and when Trump visits Russia maybe he can lay at a wreath at Stalin’s gravesite – a madman who killed over forty million of Russia’s people while making it “great”.
