The who is leonard peltier site is offering a link to another site extolling it as a place where “celebrities” are voicing their opinions and dismay about the clemency denial.
I visited the site and it didn’t strike me as a huge gathering of celebrities – what struck me was the admitted lack of being informed by a number of commenters who none the less expressed a pro Peltier sentiment – one going so far as to say Peltier was basically targeted because he was a “giant” figure in AIM during the 70’s.
“Because he was a giant figure in the American Indian Movement of the early 1970’s. It’s like saying if MLK had shot 2 people and was in jail, but for native americans instead of african americans. Basically~~~”
Really? A “giant figure” ? If so then I’d like someone, anyone, including this uniformed poster to provide links to any article or site that refers to Peltier as either a leader or a person of significance prior to Jumping Bull.
I’d like them to explain how such a venerated figure was commonly referred to as “dumb as dirt” among his cohorts.
I respect activism and free speech, I consider them essential elements of democracy, but it lends credibility when a person engaging in any form of activism actually knows what they’re talking about.
The title of celebrity has become so loosely applied it’s difficult to know who qualifies and who doesn’t – one celebrity I did recognize was Danny Glover, a long time advocate for Peltier.
I like Glover as an actor and respect his advocacy on a number of issues, but if I had the opportunity I would ask him if it’s all about justice and righting wrongs then where is his support for Perry Ray Robinson Jr, a civil rights activist murdered by AIM at WK2 and buried in a hidden unmarked grave?
And what about Annie Mae Pictou Aquash who his boy Peltier interrogated at gunpoint, would Glover like justice for her and her survivors?
There’s an obvious transparency among Peltier supporters when it comes to justice for Ray and Annie – they won’t go there because of AIM’s involvement and the linkage between AIM and Peltier.
Until they do I basically don’t give a damn about their opinion or their celebrity.
