Not only does this Pope have more integrity than the government but also seems to be genuinely concerned as opposed to the rhetorical concern so often spoken by politicians.
Asking forgiveness for the “crimes” committed against the indigenous peoples of this hemisphere – we’d be lucky to get an empty apology from the government much less an admission that it would be difficult to name a crime that wasn’t committed against the nations.
Such an admission in this day and age could well lead to demands for reparations – apparently the Pope doesn’t consider that to be mitigating, but since money is the name of the capitalism on steroids game we all know it’s a major consideration for “uncle sam” and his corporate bedfellows.
That’s alright – I don’t want any money, I want at least some portion of the treaties honored, I want sovereignty, to be truly recognized as sovereign nations and dealt with on a genuine nation to nation basis rather than the political glossolalia we’ve been hearing for centuries.
As a people we have a lot of valid grievances against the black robes and their protestant counterparts, but this pope is manning up and I like that.
Neither he nor anyone else can alter the past, but everyone is capable of being honest about it – unless they’re still into the God is on their side Manifest Destiny, papal bulls and that “agape” evangelical love that led to enslavement, murder, theft, genocide, rape, and taking our children from us.
Before the AIM leadership seizes on this and starts running their mouth they would do well to issue an apology of their own for the grief and comparable crimes they’ve committed against the nations….their own people.
