Things could be worse I hear people say-understood there is a truth in this, and with all the problems women have to contend with in this country one they don’t have to is that of what is referred to as India’s Deadly Secret in the below linked ABC report.
Brace yourself in watching it as it will surely tear at your heart.
I try to be respectful of the traditions of other cultures, and India has a rich cultural history, but this defies description and is deserving of none.
An estimated one million female infants “disappeared” annually despite laws on the books-laws that are routinely ignored and lacking any attempt at enforcement.
This has nothing to do with population control-it is singularly a targeted approach and determined by whether a child will produce income or not.
No one is so separated from the rest of the global community as to think they shouldn’t become involved-no ones own misery is so intense as to warrant ignoring the misery of others.
Humanity may be evolving technologically-even physically and intellectually(?), but at the same time those things that have truly served to define humanity such as compassion and actually giving a damn about something other than one’s own backyard are being replaced with greed, indifference, and the doctrine of ME.
There was a time when spiritual beliefs, and some sense of moral values influenced society-the reverse of that is true today, and the lack of them have become the greater influence- values and beliefs are becoming secondary to the pursuit of things no one will carry with them in their passing.
The word morality is something to sneer at now-the concept increasingly deemed as archaic-but a people, a nation that surrenders them declines.
I heard someone say once that a funeral hearse doesn’t have a luggage rack-the reason being is no one is taking more with them than what they entered this world with.
That’s something we all ought to think about-it doesn’t imply we should all grovel in the dirt or fail to pursue some measure of stability- rather I think that we should all be secure in our persons, homes, and families.
We should all be adequately clothed and fed-none should live a life of wondering where the next meal will come from-live from one check to the next-and no child should suffer or be cast aside for any reason-and certainly not that of gender………but we should also help others as much as we can, and always, always, speak out against injustice and advocate for the downtrodden regardless of ethnicity.
