Reasonable people should have the capacity to understand that no politician delivers on every campaign promise they make, it’s a near impossibility logistically when you factor in cost and opposition.
Opposition is a key reality, the government has become so party centric, so dysfunctional it’s a matter of allegiance to oppose the other party.
Granted there are often ample grounds for doing so but the problem is this opposition becomes embedded, stifles meaningful debate, and views compromise as traitorous.
Even more reasonable to understand that politicians tell people what they want to hear, what they believe will resonate – they do it every election cycle and an integral component of their bag of rhetorical tricks.
Politicians have become the backdoor man, they prefer to sneak in the back way when no one’s looking attaching amendments and riders that wouldn’t stand a snowballs chance in hell of being passed if they were a stand alone piece of legislation.
Government to a large degree is conducted behind closed doors meetings – the assumption rightfully being if the doors were open and the public actually had access or input the dynamic would change and careers could be jeopardized.
I’m willing to assume there may be a few among the elected who have a sincere desire to serve the welfare of the nation but I believe they would amount to a numerical minority.
People are attracted to power no less than they are to some form of celebrity, factor in the perks that come with the job in the Senate or House and it translates to a siren call for egotists, narcissists, liars, frauds, corporate stooges, and outright sociopaths.
“Service” becomes a vehicle and the preferred weapon of choice, something to cling to while feathering one’s nest and playing both ends against the middle.
A reality is that politicians sell their votes in one manner or another – a possible solution might be to hold public auctions affording everyone the opportunity to bid.
Doubtful the outcome would be any different as those with the most money would undoubtedly still prevail but there wouldn’t be any confusion about the process, the promised transparency would become a reality, and who the biggest prostitutes are would be public knowledge.
What is euphemistically referred to in this country as democracy of, by, and for the people is facing a crisis of epic proportions, the threat is an internal one, the epicenter of which is located in Washington,D.C. and corporate boardrooms.
A crisis that hasn’t suddenly emerged but been in the making for years, a slow growing cancer that in it’s malignancy has gone viral infecting the entire body.
To say that voting is the antidote may have become something of a misnomer in light of dysfunctional national committees, the electoral college, and the foreign intrigue of hacking attempts and fake news.
It is neither a patriotic duty or matter of national pride to facilitate decline, to pave the way for corporate influence, fascism, or oligarchy, and I am amazed that those who will endure the impact of such a course so vociferously defend the very ones who will lead them down that path.
