For the most part economics and personal finance for the nations are about putting food on the table, heat in the winter, and clothes on the back of their children, that and little else.
A lot is made of that and should be, but such conditions aren’t confined to the rez or urban communities, it is a growing demographic playing no favorites among ethnicities.
A reality related to the consumer marketplace from the price of bananas to gasoline.
Any benefits accrued from the drop in oil prices have historically been offset when they begin going back up.
That usually translates to exceeding a previous price per gallon to recoup that lost profit margin and then dropping down somewhat as the hue and cry is raised.
A transparent game routinely becoming the way of it with the thought in mind that if gas is four dollars per gallon and drops to three fifty people will be mollified – and that’s pretty much the way it’s worked.
With the per gallon cost below two dollars people have been euphoric, and all things considered have a right to be, but it is the calm before the storm.
Fossil fuels are a finite resource, as they are depleted supply and demand kicks in driving the price up – but supply and demand can be manipulated and there are countless examples to that affect.
One of the more blatant to me is the manipulation of the diamond market.
Huge vaults exist where diamonds are stored to control the supply, thereby driving up the value.
Diamonds are nothing if not plentiful, but what amounts to a monopoly controls them — monopolies also control the ebb and flow of oil.
With the dependency on oil and the lack of desire by a great many to curb consumption the environment will be further placed at risk.
The Keystone pipeline and conservative mantra of “drill baby, drill” are prime examples – the conservative approach isn’t one of concern for the public but rather to assist their corporate handlers in smiling all the way to the bank.
Wealth has it’s privileges, always has, always will – wealth insulates and prioritizes self perpetuation first and foremost. The thought of sharing is anathema unless a financial advantage in doing so is perceived.
Without wealth control and input are radically reduced. Sure you can vote but what good is that if once having voted no effort is made to hold politicians to strict account?
You can demonstrate but if it isn’t sustained and grows what good is that?
Point in case the Occupy movement.
Boycotts are an effective tool, but people apparently aren’t willing to “sacrifice” that pumpkin spiced latte at Starbucks inspite of the fact that Starbucks has joined forces with Monsanto in a suit to strip states of the ability to clearly label what a product contains.
American consumers are the fatted calf that believes entitlement is a way of life – unaware or preferring to ignore that the fatted calf is offered up as a sacrifice to feed the gluttony of corporate greed.
On some level and in some cases it can be said people get what they deserve, what they have earned in doing nothing and leaving what needs to be done to others.
I don’t have much use for politicians regardless of party affiliation, but increasingly I have even less for conservatives.
I have some issues with Unions, but the reality is without Unions children would still be working in coal mines and workers across the board in unsafe conditions making only enough to get by on.
I have some issues with some regulations as well, but the reality is without them the extent of pollution would be worse, just about everything in fact would be worse.
Regulations aren’t liked by conservatives. Why? Because they don’t give free reign to corporate interests – it’s that simple.
The same can be said of the conservative distaste for Unions-they are an obstacle to servitude wages and impact the profit margin – again, it’s that simple.
In the end it is about the message politicians want to deliver, how it is presented, how it can be made palatable, the gullibility of supporters, and the theatrics associated with it.
No greater thespians exist than those who hold office and truly believe all the world is a stage, their stage.
