All things considered whether you agree with the Viet Nam war or not I think you have to respect the fact that in that war John McCain was a POW for five and a half years – during that time upon learning he was the son of a naval admiral his captors offered to release him if he would do a propaganda piece for them – he refused knowing what lay ahead of him and the uncertainty of captivity.
But that’s where it ends for me, and all that remains is to say McCain and every other politician, especially those looking for a photo op need to get the hell off ndn land and stay off.
In the linked articles below it should be abundantly clear why I and obviously others would say this.
The bottom line is treaties have never meant a damn thing to the government, all of history verifies that they were never worth the paper written on.
It’s never mattered how many toxins or pollutants we’ve had to face as the result of corporate mining interests.
If it’s all about nation to nation negotiations as the government says then I suggest they take place on neutral ground with observers to record and publicize the proceedings.
With all the discussion about walls, border fences, and immigration I’m half inclined to believe we ought to set up check points around every rez and deny entry to those on our version of a no fly list – maybe require a passport or visa.
Which reminds me of certain events at Onondaga in upstate New York – every time state politicians think they need more money they decide taxes on the sale of tobacco on the rez is the way to go, and it doesn’t matter about treaty rights or status.
Onondaga’s response has been well, go ahead, and we’ll set up toll booths to collect from motorists who cross our land on state highways.
Needless to say the politicians rethink their position.
Maybe McCain will too….uh huh, and maybe the sun won’t come up tomorrow – the odds are probably the same.
Something else I’m not happy about are those who want to “adopt” politicians into a tribe and give them a real “genuine” ndn name – or those who when a politician visits for the photo op opportunity which usually coincides with election season go on about some “presentation” they rehearsed while standing in front of a photo of said politician even though they aren’t a “leader” but kinda, sorta by “reputation” are and can’t resist uploading a video to tell you all about it and what a real last Indian they truly are.
