I read a report recently that said GMO’s have made their way into 80% of the market food chain- some companies with an eye to their profit margin are beginning to take a public stand about the inclusion, but it’s not as if they haven’t known all along and that makes their “concern” questionable.
Boycotting a product has been shown to be an effective tool and may well be one of the last few implements the consumer can avail themselves of.
The report stressed that some “organic” products suffer a degree of infestation as well-none of which concerns Monsanto as their goal is to dominate production and consumption- another rogue corporation with a legion of bean counters and attorneys at their disposal. Not to mention politicians their lobbyists have hooked and landed.
We have always used what are referred to as heritage seeds when planting a garden, and harvest seeds for the next year-anything new, some variety of squash or legume that is introduced is heritage as well.
A person can only do so much alone against a colossus such as Monsanto, as contamination is always a possibility from the birds and the bees to the wind itself, and the way legislation that inevitably favors the rich and the corporations is forced upon us.
Hell of a thing, a sad social commentary, and telling fact of life that the designs of corporations have as a matter of routine been given free rein to in effect dictate what we will eat, and in doing so blatantly ignore the health and welfare of people and the most fundamental of human rights.
Norway has created a seed bank with an eye to a global catastrophic event, GMO’s with their built in sterility may soon become that event….too bad a clean air bank can’t be created as well.
Ultimately it is about choice-if people are fine with GMOs that’s their choice, and they’re welcome to whatever measure Monsanto would like to assign to me and mine, they can also buy into the new generation herbicides and pesticides Monsanto has created to deal with the problems arising from their mutant creations- but as the saying goes another persons “rights” stop where mine begin….something legislators, regulators, and corporations need to be made aware.
I’ve had people tell me there are studies that say GMO’s are perfectly fine, my response is always uh huh, and if these corporate funded studies know otherwise what would they do, include that in the report?
This planet, this land, is the only home we know and probably will ever inhabit with the possible exception of a very few “explorers” living in pods within our solar system on some distant planet-yet as fragile as it is becoming the vast majority from the rez to suburbia to the urban environs treat it as though it is replaceable, as though it’s their personal dumping ground, some awareness is required there as well.
