The evolving crisis in Japan and the devastating potential inherent in events is almost beyond comprehension.
The term nuclear nation has come to mind-Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and now this-as a nation they have suffered immensely. Their recovery after World War 2 and rise to a position of global power and influence has been phenomenal.
It speaks to a national and communal strength and will that they are called upon once again to summon. Life for so many seems to be a series of inequities, and yet we witness people and nations overcoming them-never easy, and yet possible for those who will dig in and do what it takes.
A lot of lessons to be learned in this misfortune, and a heavy cost associated with them, as well as examples of an indomitable spirit, none more I think than the one exhibited by the fifty who have chosen to remain at the nuclear facilities, at great personal risk, in an attempt to contain the meltdowns.
Even if they survive they will pay a price in related health issues- they are warriors in the truest sense, born of a nation with a long and proud warrior legacy-warriors willing to risk everything for the common good.
I am proud of them-we all should be.
