“If you want to motivate people, you don’t rely on logic and reasoning. No, what
people need is a symbol. A slogan, a flag, the face of a hero to stick on a T-shirt.
So what do you do if the real world doesn’t provide you with something people can
rally around? You just make that shit up.”
“If you avoid breaking laws and do what you’re told and ignore the poor, the oppressed and the downtrodden – you probably won’t be bothered. “
The above quote is featured on the John Graham “promoting truth and justice” site.
There’s a certain truth in this, people understand that if you rise up to protest an injustice you’re inviting trouble, and yet in failing to the consent of silence is given.
Even in protest silence can be an element, and so it is and has been within AIM when it comes to the murder of Annie Mae Pictou Aquash and perhaps more notably in the case of John Graham who was convicted for his participation in the murder of Annie.
Graham would have the public believe that a not only was he Annie’s dear friend but also a self described “land warrior”.
Baseless titles such as these validate the contents of an earlier blog titled “They Just Make That Shit Up”, the perceived need to elevate a person from the status of perpetrator to victim – a strategy employed in behalf of Leonard Peltier with greater success than Graham’s pathetic attempts even though the Peltier myth is unravelling.
Graham who in various interviews has admitted his presence from the moment Annie was abducted in California to her bound with rope return to AIM’s personally maintained gulag known as Pine Ridge even in the midst of protesting that he had responded to a call to help Annie relocate to a “safe house” and once having done so went about his way.
Graham’s presence with fellow cohorts Arlo Looking Cloud who has confessed and now serving a sentence in federal prison and Theda Nelson Clark pie patrol matriarch and relative of Russell Means at Means brothers house, Bill Means, where the call was taken to murder Annie doesn’t sound much like searching for a safe house.
Nor does the interrogation and physical abuse she endured at the WKLDC office carried out by additional Means relatives and legal in for a penny in for a pound mouthpiece Bruce Ellison.
Graham like Peltier currently resides in state prison while Peltier calls federal prison home – and Graham like Peltier has sought to create a comparable myth that he too is a “warrior” unjustly targeted for not ignoring the poor, the oppressed, and the downtrodden.
It’s as though the public has acknowledged the adage “fool me once shame on you – fool me twice shame on me” and refuse to be taken in by the claims of yet another bogus warrior.
If so then one could say it is a sign of progress much the same as the questions that have arisen related to Peltier’s claims and the exodus of those who have elected to do the math for themselves and accept the fact that two plus two actually does amount to four.
In an “opinion piece” during the Burns Refuge standoff Last Real Indians attempted to make a quasi case that perhaps as indigenous people we might somehow be obliged to support the all white militia type occupiers even though the Paiute whose hereditary land it is were vocal in denouncing the occupation and demanding their departure.
I admit to being initially startled by this, but only momentarily when recalling that Last Real Indians is also a site that champions common thugs like the AIM leadership, refuses to address the murder of Annie, Perry Ray Robinson jr. or the multiple graves of AIM victims at WK2, and in fact site owner Chase Iron Eyes who in envisioning himself as a real last ndn announced he would assume the mantle of attorney for Graham.
CIE may garner some attention, and ultimately that may be the impetus, but Graham is down for the count and he’s not going anywhere – maybe CIE could offer his services as defense counsel to the Burns occupiers.
Graham’s defense is no less a sham than that of Leonard Peltier – both filled with contradictions, verbal miscues, false claims, omissions, and an incredibly blatant selectivity when it comes to what points to address and what not to.
WKLDC and ILPDC have raked in a lot of money over time promoting Peltier’s “innocence” though they now repeatedly fail to realize fundraising goals.
Graham”s “defense committee” hasn’t fared as well, in fact they are doing so poorly they may need to adopt additional elements of the Peltier dog and pony show and begin claiming Graham is a “leader” of AIM or a “hero”.
Perhaps Graham could take up painting or even author his own book, though I doubt it would do much good as the public has become somewhat jaded when it comes to the cliche of referencing thugs as warriors and have acquired an awareness that thugs are inclined to make shit up.
